Torsion of the spleen and associated 'prune belly syndrome'. A case report and review of the literature.
Splenic torsion as a complication of wandering spleen is rare. We report the clinical findings, diagnostic problems and treatment of a 1-year-old Coloured child (with classic 'prune belly syndrome') in whom the spleen had undergone torsion, thus simulating an intra-abdominal abscess. The postoperative course was uneventful.

متن کاملSplenic Abscess in Adult Patients with Sickle Cell Disease
In Sickle cell disease (SCD) patients, the spleen commonly enlarges during the first two decades of life but then undergoes auto-splenectomy due to repeated attacks of vaso-occlusion and infarction. This, however, is not the case in Saudi patients with SCD, where Splenomegaly sometimes persists into adult life. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the commonly inherited diseases in the Eastern P...

Splenic complications in malaria may be either simple asymptomatic enlargement or serious conditions, such as splenic infarction, rupture, hematoma or abscess, which can be fatal. Only a few cases have been reported in the literature since 1960. The true incidence of splenic complications is not known because of underdiagnosis and underreporting. We report here four cases which were successfull...

By MAJOR E. B. SMITH, M.C., AND LT. COL. R. P. CUSTER, MC. I NFECTIOUS mononucleosis is properly regarded as a benign disease. When death occurs it can be ascribed to a complication rather than to the disease itself. Pneumonia, edema of the glottis, and hemorrhage from a deep tonsillar ulceration were terminal conditions in a few cases of which we have personal knowledge. Rupture of the spleen ...
متن کاملSpontaneous subcapsular splenic haematoma in acute malaria.
SPONTANEOUS subcapsular splenic hematoma occurring during an attack of acute malaria is not described as a clinical entity in standard textbooks of tropical medicine. Andrew (1945) suggested that it occurred in one in 6oo cases of naturally acquired malaria. Read and others (1946) described a similar condition in five of 300 cases of therapeutic malaria. The following case is presented, as it i...
